Background

Unsurprisingly, fuel theft is a problem faced by many people operating in the agricultural sector. What may be a surprise, is that fuel skimming, the theft of relatively small amounts of fuel on numerous occasions, is much more common than the noticeable theft of full tanks of fuel.

By its nature, skimming can be happening for many years without ever being detected as their is no obvious signs it has ever taken place. Skimming is normally carried out by people who have access to premises or insider knowledge as to the location and security measures in place for vehicles on an agricultural site. These people are often employees, ex employees or people who have access to the site during a normal working week.

The amounts stolen tend to be modest to keep it from becoming apparent thus ensuring a continued supply. It is estimated that these thefts may add 2-4% to total fuel consumption and prevention has always been difficult to achieve in a way that justifies the expense of doing so.
